American Tribal Style®
American Tribal Style® (ATS®) is a Bellydance group style that started developing in the 1980s in San Francisco, California, under the guidance and direction of Carolena E. Nericcio-Bohlman with her group FatChanceBellyDance®.
Its roots are to be found in Jamila Salimpour’s Ethnic Style, which was then complemented with an elegant dance posture and elements from other dance forms such as Oriental Bellydance, Kathak (an Indian dance form), flamenco, and other folkloric styles.
The idea beyond the ATS® format is to allow dancers to perform together within a codified vocabulary that includes a certain amount of formations, movements, and cues, which make it easy for the group to communicate within itself and thus to improvise and dance synchronously without previous arrangement.
Yuri has been a FatChanceBellyDance® Brother Studio since September 2017 and part of FatChanceBellyDance® SSCE (Sister Studio Continuing Education) since March 2018. He offers ATS® classes in Berlin (see Classes section)
